| [ Publication date Jan 01, 2001 ] |

- "I did not do it" - A common way to present this defence is to give an alibi. This "defence" , if true, can apply to all offences
- "I was forced to do it; I had no choice" - This means the accused had acted involuntarily. This defence can also lead to a "not guilty" verdict for all types of offences.
- "I was mistaken" - Mistake as a defence only applies to offences committed deliberately (Deliberate or Intentional Offences)
- "I am under-aged" - The Penal Code says in Sections 82 and 83 nothing committed by a child under 7 years of age is an offence. For a child between 7 to 12 years of age, he will not have committed an offence if the court thinks he does not have sufficient maturity to understand what he was doing.
- "It was purely an accident" - This defence can apply to offences committed deliberately, recklessly or negligent. However, the courts require that the accident happened while lawful acts were carried out.
