Singaporeans Arrested for distributing copyrighted songs on Internet

In a media release by the Singapore Police on 17 Aug 2005, the police stated that they had arrested 3 suspects for illegal distribution of copyrighted songs on the Internet. The Police stated that this is the first operation of this kind in Singapore.


Deposit Insurance Bill Introduced

The Minister for Education and Deputy Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on 15 Aug 2005 moved the Deposit Insurance Bill ("DI Bill") for first reading in Parliament. The Bill will be read for a second time and discussed at the next available Parliamentary sitting.


Transfer of Cases Between Courts Made Easier

The Subordinate Courts Act was amended on 15 August 2005 to allow for cases to be easily transferred from the Subordinate Courts to the High Court and visa versa as well as between the District Court and Magistrates Court and visa versa.

MAS Signs MOU with the Emirates Securities and Commodities Authority of the United Arab Emirates

Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Emirates Securities and Commodities Authority (ESCA).



The Money-Changing and Remittance Businesses (Amendment) Bill 2005 Passed

Parliament on 15 August 2005 passed the The Money-Changing and Remittance Businesses (Amendment) Bill 2005. According to the speech to Parliament by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Deputy Chairman, Monetary Authority Of Singapore, the amendments aim to refine and better reflect MAS' supervisory approach towards holders of remittance licences and money-changer's licences, focusing on anti-money laundering (AML) and countering the financing of terrorism (CFT). MAS does not supervise holders of these licences for their safety and soundness.


Professional Engineers (Amendment) Bill 2005 Passed

The Professional Engineers (Amendment) Bill 2005 and Architects (Amendment) Bill 2005 were read a second time and passed by Parliament today. The Bills aim to enable the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) and Board of Architects (BOA) to more effectively regulate and uphold professionalism and safety standards in the construction industry.


New Workmen's Compensation Medical Board

With effect from 15 August 2005, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will be setting up a Workmen's Compensation Medical Board to provide impartial assessments on the degree of disablement in work-related injuries for workmen's compensation claims. The Medical Board will only be called upon to provide assessments when an objection is raised by any party against the initial treating doctor's medical assessment.


Signing of the Korea-Singapore Free Trade Agreement

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Ban Ki-Moon and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore, Lim Hng Kiang today signed the Korea-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (KSFTA). The KSFTA is Korea?s first FTA with an Asian country.


Five Internet Pirates Nabbed in Anti-Piracy Operation

Early this morning, Police arrested 4 men and a woman, aged between 23 to 41 years old for peddling pirated materials on the Internet. The subjects were arrested in their respective residences. About 1600 infringing optical discs along with an assortment of computers, storage mediums, electronic gadgets and paper entries were also seized for purpose of investigations.
