Trade Marks Act To Be Amended To Comply With the Singapore Treaty on The Laws of Trademarks

The amendments, introduced in Parliament, is to bring Singapore trade mark registration procedures in line with Article 7 of the Singapore Trademark Treaty and to allow for a single application to cover more than one class of godds and/or services.


Public Feedback on Draft Penal Code (Amendment) Bill.

The Singapore Government is planning to up-date the Penal Code to: (i) keep abreast of technological changes; (ii) address crimes that are of concern in Singapore like credit card fraud and matters relating to race and religion; and(iii) remove arcane crimes.

The last major review of the Penal Code was made in 1984 when mandatory minimum sentences were imposed for certain serious offences.


Banking (Amendment) Bill Introduces New Safeguards For Depositors

The Banking (Amendment) Bill, introduced in Parliament, is intended to strengthen prudential safeguards to protect depositors and give the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) more power to deal with a distressed or insolvent bank. It also provides banks with greater operational flexibility as they will no longer be required to maintain a statutory reserve fund.


Property Tax Surcharge on Foreigners To Be Abolished

The Property Tax Surcharge (Abolition) Bill was introduced in Parliament to repeal the Property Tax (Surcharge) Act as it is no longer necessary to impose a surcharge on the property tax of properties held by foreigners.

Parliament has introduced the Arms and Explosives (Amendment) Bill that will give authorities greater power to deal with potential terrorist activities.


Charities Act To Be Amended to Expand Scope

The Charities (Amendment) Bill was introduced in Parliament to give greater powers to the Commissioner of Charities and his deputy. Other amendments include (a) the establishment of a Charities Council that will advise the Commissioner on regulations relating to charities; (b) greater regulation of charities; and (c) provide for the appointment of Sector Administrators who will regulate a defined class of charities.


Government To Introduce Wide Ranging Changes to Criminal Law

The Home Affairs Ministry is planning (a) to introduce legislation on 19 new offences and expand the scope of 19 existing offences in the Penal Code; (b) to review the penalties under the Penal Code and give judges more flexibility in sentencing ; (c) to introduce laws to protect minors and the mentally handicapped; and (d) to amend the Arms and Explosives Act that will likely give authorities more teeth to deal with potential terrorist activities. Singapore and Uzbekistan Sign Economic Cooperation Agreement

Singapore and Uzbekistan today signed an economic cooperation agreement that will strengthen and develop trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. It also aims to stimulate new areas of economic interaction, such as the creation of joint ventures, industrial cooperation, marketing, leasing and management.
