UK Law Practice Hit By E-Mail Scam
Posted on Thursday, July 06, 2006 - 12:00 AM

Although not strictly Singapore related news, it should of general interest to Singapore lawyers. Last month (June 2006), a UK law practice, Nabarro Nathanson, was hit by an email scam with bogus messages claiming to be from the law practice being sent around the world. The scam is similar to what is commonly known as the Nigerian Scam.

The Press Release from Nabarro Nathanson states:

Potential fraud - scam email

Nabarro Nathanson is aware of a series of bogus or scam emails being sent around the world and which purport to come from individuals within this firm. The emails generally refer to a deceased individual (sometimes referred to as Antonio Montoya) and notify the recipient that they have the opportunity to "inherit" a significant sum of money. The email then goes on to ask the recipient for personal information. These communications are not legitimate and do not emanate from this Firm or any of its employees. They seem to be part of a scam, and use the name of this Firm and its employees without due authority and we believe are part of an illegal scheme to fraudulently obtain confidential personal information and/or money.
If you receive such an email we advise that you ignore it and do not correspond with the sender.

More information can be found on the FSA website: FSA consumer information

If you doubt the provenance of any communication that appears to be from Nabarro Nathanson please contact:
