Launch of Public Consultation on National Climate Change Strategy
Posted on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - 03:00 PM
Climate change is one of the most important environmental challenges confronting the global community today. The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR), together with its statutory board, the National Environment Agency (NEA), is responsible for spearheading initiatives to address the issue of climate change in Singapore.
2 The MEWR and NEA have been working with other agencies to develop a holistic National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) that will explain how Singapore can address climate change in an environmentally and economically sustainable way, and actively engage the people and private sectors in climate change. The NCCS will examine four key prongs of action: vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, mitigation of our carbon emissions, raising awareness on climate change as well as competency building. (Note: A factsheet on the background and principles of the proposed NCCS is attached overleaf).
3 To gather ideas and feedback on the proposed NCCS, the MEWR and NEA will launch a public consultation on 30 May 2006. In particular, the following types of feedback will be sought:
* Ideas on how existing climate change measures can be improved;
* Comments on proposed climate change measures;
* Ideas on other climate change measures that should be explored.
4 Members of the public, companies and organizations are encouraged to visit http://www.mewr.gov.sg/nccs to access the NCCS consultation document and to provide feedback accordingly. The consultation exercise will close on 30 September 2006.
