Posted on Saturday, March 04, 2006 - 12:00 AM

Singapore has released its electoral boundaries report in another sign that a General Election is likely to be called soon.

According to the report, the coming elections will have 14 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and 9 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs).

The changes are:-

(a) Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC will be renamed Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

(b) The Ayer Rajah and Bukit Timah constituencies will be gone and will be part of GRCs.

(c) 2 new SMCs have been created: Yio Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang.

(d) East Coast is now a 5-member GRC, down from the previous 6.

(e) Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC will have 6 MPs, up from the previous 5.

The total number of MPs to be returned remains at 84.

Some 2,158,000 voters are eligible to vote in the next election, with 857 registered to vote overseas. This is an increase of almost 121,000 voters over the 2001 General Election.
