Man With Walking Disability Fined For Parking In Handicap Lot

A polio-striken man with a walking disability was fined on 11 January 2006 for parking in a handicap parking lot.

The man's car did not display a disability parking sticker because he was not successful when he applied to NCSS (National Council of Social Service) three years ago.

Since 1 July 2004, The Car Park Label Scheme for People with Disabilities is administered by the Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS). The elibigility requirements found in the AAS website states:

1. The parking label is to facilitate owners of the vehicle to park in parking lots reserved for people with physical disabilities.

2. The applicant must have a mobility problem requiring the use of mobility aids such as wheelchairs, crutches, walking frame/stick, orthosis or prosthesis.

3. The label is issued to vehicle owners strictly for their own use at HDB and URA carparks.
