Amendments to The Computer Misuse Act
Posted on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 - 11:12 PM

Singapore's Parliament has passed amendments to the Computer Misuse Act that allow authorities to take pre-emptive action against "cyber terrorists".
The amendments basically allows the minister to empower any person or organisation to take pre-emptive action against computer terrorism. This includes threats to a computer system that can jeopardise national security, essential services, defence or foreign relations of the nation.

In Parliament, the Senior Minister of State (Law and Home Affairs) Ho Peng Kee explained that the amendments do not define who can act against the cyber terrorists since different government agencies may be involved. He also explained that it also does not spell out the measures that the minister can take to allow for flexibility in coping with the quickly evolving nature of computing and the changing tactics of cyber terrorist.
