MHA/IDA Statement On Commencement Of New Regulatory Controls On Prepaid Sim Card

Prepaid SIM card users are reminded that from 1 November, all prepaid SIM cards users have to register their particulars with their respective mobile operators, M1, SingTel and StarHub.

2. There is no need to rush for re-registration - users can do it in good time when they top up their cards. Users have six months to re-register as the re-registration period lasts from 1 Nov 2005 to 1 May 2006. Only those prepaid SIM cards not re-registered by 1 May 2006 will be deactivated. Deactivation will be from 2 May 2006.

3. Each subscriber can register up to a maximum of 10 prepaid SIM cards. Subscribers must be at least 15 years old.

4. For registration and re-registration, prepaid SIM cards users can go to any retail shop which sells prepaid SIM cards of the respective service providers. Please bring along the following identity documents, i.e. for Singaporeans, the NRIC; permanent residents, the blue identity card; for National Servicemen, the SAF11B, SPF11B and SCDF11B; for foreign workers, the Work Permit Identification Cards (issued from 3 May 1999); and for foreigners, the passports. For re-registration, please also bring along your prepaid SIM cards.

5. As at 31 Oct, terminal devices have been installed in over 1,000 retail shops islandwide. This covers over 90 per cent of existing retail shops that sell prepaid SIM cards, and among them 7-Eleven which sells prepaid SIM cards of all three mobile service providers. Retailers who wish to install such Terminal Devices are advised to approach their mobile service provider.
