MITA Seeks Views on the Proposed Amendments to the Telecommunications Act
Posted on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 06:52 PM
The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts ("MITA") is embarking on a public consultation on the proposed amendments to the Telecommunication Act (TA). MITA has on 16 July 2004 released a consultation paper seeking feedback from the public on the draft Bill.
The TA spells out the powers of the Info-Communications Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and the rights and duties of telecommunication licensees and persons involved in the provision of telecommunication services in Singapore.
The TA was last reviewed in 1999, before the full liberalisation of the telecommunications industry in April 2000. The review is to ensure that the legislative framework will help to bring about effective regulation for a rapidly changing industry. MITA, together with the IDA has reviewed the TA. MITA targets to table the Telecommunication (Amendment) Bill in Parliament in second half of 2004.
Details of proposed revisions can be found in MITA’s Telecommunications Act Consultation Document, available at www.mita.gov.sg. These materials can also be accessed at the IDA website at www.ida.gov.sg and the Government Online Consultation Portal at www.feedback.gov.sg.
MITA invites views and comments to be submitted in writing on or before 5pm, 6 August 2004.
